CATCH UP WITH A CLASSIC

Retro revival: Mortal Kombat

The Ultimate Fighting Game!

The key to this fighting franchise’s success is that it’s always evolving.

Mortal Kombat’s fast battles and over-the-top characters first exploded onto the scene in 1992, and made a catchphrase of Scorpion’s “Get over here!” cry.

Since then, there has been a steady stream of games, each keeping up with new technology and innovations. Most recently, Mortal Kombat 11 arrived on PC and consoles – and was followed by a big-budget movie.

Choose from a host of unforgettable characters to create your crew.

It’s to be expected, then, that this franchise would set its sights on conquering smaller screens as well. This App Store incarnation is a slick and clever one: using taps and holds on the touchscreen, players can execute attacks and specials with incredible speed.

It’s less technical than the complex button combinations of past games, but doesn’t sacrifice the satisfying and tactical feel of the fights.

Scorpion’s “Get over here!” special move lives on!

There are no compromises on the roster either: you can unlock hundreds of characters, from retro originals including Scorpion and Sub-Zero to newer folks such as Jacqui Briggs.

Collect and combine your favourites to build a devastating team for 3v3 combat. The more successful you are, the more experience you earn to level them up.

And it’s easier than ever to hop online for a quick scrap against other players – the weekly Faction Wars challenges, in particular, will really push you to the limit.

Goro’s still causing colossal damage.

This Mortal Kombat might also be the most customisable ever. As well as unlocking various special attacks and other rewards, players can compete in challenges to earn different victory stances or taunts to really personalise their favourite fighters.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be Mortal Kombat without those trademark Fatality moves. Be warned: the screen may be smaller, but these moves are just as, um, impactful as ever!
