Element X - Secure Chat & Call
Sovereign. Seamless. On Matrix
Free · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.
Experience the next generation of sovereign & secure collaboration - it's faster, simpler & more reliable. Still decentralized, still built on Matrix.
Freedom to communicate on your own terms
For individuals and communities - private communication between family, friends, hobby groups, clubs, etc.
Element X gives you fast, secure and private instant messaging and video calls built on Matrix, the open standard for real-time communication. This is a free and open-source app maintained at https://github.com/element-hq/element-x-ios
Stay in touch with friends, family and communities with:
• Real time messaging & video calls
• Public rooms for open group communication
• Private rooms for closed group communication
• Rich messaging features: emoji reactions, replies, polls, pinned messages and more.
• Video calling while browsing messages.
• Interoperability with other Matrix-based apps such as FluffyChat, Cinny and many more.
Privacy-first
Unlike some other messengers from Big Tech companies, we don’t mine your data or monitor your communications.
Own your conversations
Choose where to host your data - from any public server (the largest free server is matrix.org, but there are plenty of others to choose from) to creating your own personal server and hosting it on your own domain. This ability to choose a server is a large part of what differentiates us from other real time communication apps. However you host, you have ownership; it’s your data. You’re not the product. You’re in control.
Communicate in real time, all the time
Use Element everywhere. Stay in touch wherever you are with fully synchronised message history across all your devices, including on the web at https://app.element.io
Element X is our next-generation app
If you’re using the previous-generation Element Classic app, it’s time to try Element X! It’s faster, easier to use, and more powerful than the classic app. It’s better in every way and we’re adding new features all the time.

26.05.3 25 May
Good news everyone!
This release brings an important security update, alongside improved support for right to left languages and a bug fix for live location sharing. But we're not done yet! This update also brings a highly requested feature, which is the ability to edit and crop an image before upload.
26.05.2 18 May
Good news, everyone!
This release includes a lot of great new features.
First of all, we now support live location sharing. This allows you to send real-time location updates in a room, so your family and friends can see where you are, even when the app is in the background or your screen is locked while you’re out jogging and listening to music.
In group chats, only moderators can use this feature by default, but admins can easily change this in the room’s permission settings.
We’ve also enabled searching the public room directory. You can now browse the wide range of public rooms your server has curated and find and join the communities that interest you.
Last but not least, users can now request to join rooms that support this specific access setting. If you come across an interesting room that allows join requests and you don’t have an invite, you can simply ask to join and wait for a moderator to review your request and send an invitation.
Moderators can view all pending join requests in the rooms they manage and decide whether to accept or decline them.
At the moment, creating or configuring rooms with the “ask to join” setting isn’t supported, we only support existing rooms with this access type. Stay tuned for a future update!
